Sustainable Development

Glass: the only packaging material that is infinitely and 100% recyclable

Glass features intrinsic qualities that make it highly safe for the environment.
Because glass allows consumer needs to be fulfilled while preserving natural resources for future generations, the recycling of glass is highly compatible with a sustainable development approach.

Because it is 100% recyclable, a small glass bottle can therefore be used to produce a new one; in infinite terms, this means that the glass can always be recycled, where nothing is lost in terms of quantity or quality.

With this in mind, SGD has now created the first glass that is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable: Infinite Glass.
This glass, designed for our clients in the fragrance and cosmetic industry, is made exclusively from recycled
household glass, with no raw materials added.
Convinced of the future of this glass, SGD has launched its first line of eco-designed small bottles and jars,
the 100% ecological Gaïa line.

What are the ecological stakes of glass recycling?
The use of shredded recycled class in the glass production process has major ecological advantages:
saving energy, since the gathered glass melts at lower temperatures than natural resources, so this step is easier to accomplish and faster.
limiting CO2 emissions into the atmosphere: each ton of shredded recycled glass that is heated results in fewer CO2 emissions.
reducing the dependence on natural resources, since shredded recycled glass replaces raw materials (silica sand, calcium and sodium carbonate) that would be included in the glass's composition.
Lowering the volume of waste and maximizing the value of household waste by avoiding landfill dumping and incineration.

SGD has made its usage of recycled glass one of the key factors of its environmental policy.
In our factories, we provide an outlet for shredded recycled glass and we recycle all of our own production waste.
All of these initiatives are in response to growing expectations by our clients and socially aware consumers, who are now highly involved in the economic and ecological stakes of recycling, just as they are with issues related to sustainable development.

From the collected glass to the consumer: an ecological chain

  1. The general public drops off used glass in recycling bins or containers.
  2. The glass is collected and transported to treatment center.
  3. The glass is sorted and rid of impurities, and is transformed into shredded glass.
  4. The shredded glass is taken to glass factories, where it is melted in order to produce new glass containers (small bottles, jars, etc…).
  5. The small glass bottles and jars are delivered to our clients.
  6. They go back to the distribution circuit, intended for stores and consumers.
* Shredded glass, the main raw material used by glass-makers, is the glass that originates from sorted recycling and which is then reused to make glass. It can also come from a glass factory's own production waste.
